Welcome to Hilton C. Buley Library
Welcome to the Buley Library, located in the heart of the Southern Connecticut State University campus. The library is open to the university community and to visitors.
The mission of Buley Library is to support and enhance the teaching, learning, scholarship, and research mission of the University and the life-long learning of our students by providing user-centered services, comprehensive and diverse collections, multiple learning spaces, innovative technologies, and opportunities to create and discover.
Directions
From New Haven:
From MLK Jr. Blvd/CT-34, turn right onto Ella T Grasso Blvd/CT-10. At the end of the Ella T Grasso Blvd, turn left onto Crescent st. At the second light turn right onto Fitch St. At the third light, turn right into the library parking lot.
From Hartford:
Take I-91 South to Exit 1 onto MLK Jr. Blvd/CT-34. Keep right onto Ella T Grasso Blvd/CT-10. At the end of the Ella T Grasso Blvd, turn left onto Crescent st. At the second light, turn right onto Fitch St. At the third light, turn right into the library parking lot.
From New London:
Take I-95 South to Exit 47, MLK Jr. Blvd/CT-34. Keep right onto Ella T Grasso Blvd/CT-10. At the end of the Ella T Grasso Blvd, turn left onto Crescent st. At the second light, turn right onto Fitch St. At the third light, turn right into the library parking lot.
From Stamford:
Take I-95 North to Exit 44 onto MLK Jr. Blvd/CT-34. Keep right onto Ella T Grasso Blvd/CT-10. At the end of the Ella T Grasso Blvd, turn left onto Crescent st. At the second light, turn right onto Fitch St. At the third light, turn right into the library parking lot.

Parking
Visitors to campus can park in commuter lots (lots 8 and 9 and Wintergreen Garage) or make arrangements through the host department in advance. Day passes are available at University Police or arranged through the host department.
Alumni
SCSU Alumni should provide their current Alumni membership card or latest issued student ID when requesting guest library privileges.
All books must be returned before borrowing privileges are extended. A $25.00 processing fee will be charged for lost or damaged books. All fees must be paid in full before library privileges are extended. The library reserves the right to suspend library privileges if policies are not observed. The guest library card is non-transferable. Your use of the library card indicates that you agree to follow all Buley Library policies.
Library Borrowing Privileges:
- 10 circulating books can be checked out, with the option to renew one time
- Library privileges renewed annually
- In-house reference assistance
Buley Library Privileges Not Available:
- Media and Curriculum Collections materials do not circulate
- Intralibrary Loan from Connecticut State Colleges and University Libraries
- Interlibrary Loan service
- Remove access to library databases

Community Members/Friends of the Library
Guest borrowers must be at least 18 years old in order to borrow books from the Buley Library. All borrowers must complete the Guest/Alumni Library Card Application in person at the Check Out Desk. A photo I.D. or other official identification is required when applying for a library card. Your application will be reviewed with access being granted on the same day or within 2 business days. Library privileges will be for one year.

Accessibility
Buley Library provides access to materials, information and services for individuals with disabilities. Our library’s front entrance is accessible through the power-equipped doors and every floor in the building is accessible by elevator.
- Our library services for patrons with disabilities are contingent upon staff availability and reasonable accommodation. Advance notice is appreciated when more extensive help is required.
Library services for persons with disabilities may include:
- Retrieving library materials for library patrons who are unable to access the collection
- Assistance with photocopying a reasonable number of pages from journal articles or books
- Research assistance with the library online catalog and other electronic databases
- Library in-house use of special equipment such as the Liberty Plus, a portable CCTV that enlarges print material
- There is a free AI-adapted, PDF converter available for open access journals at https://scia11y.org/.
Special Collections and Archives
Buley Library offers users access rare and unique materials including manuscripts, rare books, photographs, prints, university yearbooks, New Haven mayoral papers, and records documenting Southern Connecticut State University’s history. The collections also document the history of Southern Connecticut State University.
Some highlights of our collections include:
- 19th- and early 20th-century children’s literature
- Artists’ books
- A growing collection of New Haven political papers, including records from recent mayors
In addition to our physical holdings, our digital collections feature:
- Early 20th-century postcards
- The Laurel (the yearbook of Southern Connecticut State University)
- Mayoral papers of John DeStefano, Jr.
These materials are available through the Connecticut Digital Archive (CTDA). Links to selected digital exhibits, including student-created galleries, are also available.

The Art Gallery at Southern Connecticut State University is a dynamic and vibrant space that serves as a hub for artistic exploration, creativity, and cultural engagement within our academic community. Located at the heart of our campus, this gallery is a place where art transcends boundaries and inspires thought-provoking conversations.
As you enter the gallery, you'll be greeted by a constantly evolving collection of contemporary and traditional artworks. The gallery's diverse exhibitions feature pieces from both emerging and renowned artists, as well as contributions from our own talented students and faculty.
