Borrowing Physical Materials

Buley Library has approximately 500,000 physical volumes, many of which can be borrowed and taken out of the library. All SCSU students, faculty, and staff have borrowing privileges in the library.

Your Library Card

Your student Hoot Loot or CSCU ID serves as your library card. All students, faculty, and staff at Southern are issued an ID by the University Card Office.

Without the card we need your Student ID number and a photo identification to borrow materials. Students are not allowed to transfer their ID cards or borrow library materials for other individuals. Report all lost or stolen cards immediately or you may be held responsible for any library materials borrowed.

All full-time and part-time undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in the CSCU (Ct. State College & Universities) System, CSCU faculty, and staff may borrow library materials from any of the libraries. All library patrons must present a current, valid University identification when checking out material and agree to abide by all applicable policies.

Borrowing Details

Loan Periods and Renewals

  • Books from the Main Collection (second and third floors)
    • Undergraduate Students: 28 days with up to two renewals
    • Graduate Students: 120 days with up to two renewals
    • Faculty & Staff: 120 days with unlimited renewals
  • Books from the Textbook Collection
    • One semester. Due on the last day of the semester as listed in the academic calendar.
  • Media (CDs and DVDs)
    • 7 days with up to two renewals for all patron groups.
  • Course Materials (Reserves)
    • Loan periods can vary between two or four hours, and one or two days.
  • Laptops and Chromebooks
    • One semester. Due on the last day of the semester as listed in the academic calendar.
  • Books from other CSCU Libraries
    • Undergraduate and Graduate Students: 28 days with one renewal
    • Faculty & Staff: 120 days with unlimited renewals
  • Media from other CSCU Libraries
    • All: 14 days with one renewal
  • Interlibrary Loan
    • Due dates and renewals are determined by the lending library. Look at the book strap tag or ILLiad for due date and renewal options.

Note: Our system will automatically try to renew (extend the due date) up to the limit. It will send an email when renewed.

Loan Recall

Library books are subject to recall after 2 weeks. If another library patron places a hold on an item that's checked out, the book(s) will need to be returned within 14 days.

Loan Limits

A maximum of 50 items can be checked out from Buley Library. A maximum of 30 items from the CSCU Library System (Connecticut State Colleges & Universities and the Connecticut State Library) can be checked out.

 

Students from the Connecticut State Colleges and Universities System will have library privileges. All students must present their student ID to the Access Services Department. Your guest library privileges may be delayed if the Access Services Department needs to verify your enrollment status.

Friends of Buley Library and community borrowers must present membership information.

Library guest borrowers must be at least 18 years old in order to borrow books from Buley Library. All borrowers need to fill out the application form in person at the Check Out Desk. A photo I.D. or other official identification must be presented when applying for a library card. After completing the application, your application will be reviewed and may be granted that day or within 2 business days. Library privileges for will be for one year.

Suggested Fee: Join the Friends of Buley Library with a minimum donation of $35.00. The library only accepts a check or money order.

All books must be returned on time and all fines paid before library privileges are extended. Lost or damaged books will be charged to you and must be paid before library privileges are granted. Your use of the library card indicates that you agree to follow all Buley Library policies. The library reserves the right to suspend library privileges if policies are not observed. The guest library card is non-transferable.

Library Borrowing Privileges:

  • 10 general circulating books can be checked out, with the option to renew one time
  • Library card is good for an entire year
  • In-house reference assistance

Buley Library Privileges Not Available:

  • Media and Curriculum Collections materials do not circulate
  • Intralibrary from Connecticut State Colleges and Universities Libraries/ Interlibrary Loans service are not available
  • Access to the library's online databases from off-campus is not available
