Plagiarism, or literary theft, is a serious offense which may incur equally serious penalties.  When you use an idea from an author's work without properly citing it, or when you cut and paste from the internet or an online article, you are stealing someone else's work.  Academic expulsion, failing grades, revoked degrees, and termination of employment (if an employer is covering the tuition) are all possible outcomes for the plagiarist.  It is absolutely imperative that any paper, thesis, or dissertation be properly documented, primarily when the material presented is not the author's.
