Call Numbers and Locations
Buley Library uses the Library
of Congress classification system to catalog and arrange books. Call numbers are assigned by the major subject of the book, so books on similar topics are often on the same or nearby shelves.
When you search CONSULS for books, you'll see 3 boxes on the item record: Location, Call No., and Status.

Here's how to interpret what you see:
Note: Not all materials have been moved from the old library.
- SCSU Stacks are on the 2nd and 3rd floors of Buley:
- Stacks call numbers beginning with A-NC are on the 2nd floor.
- Stacks call numbers beginning with ND-Z are on the 3rd floor.
- SCSU Conn Rm or Rare Books are closed collections. Please see a Reference Librarian.
- SCSU Curr Lab materials are on the 3rd floor.
- SCSU Juvenile books are on the 3rd floor.
- SCSU Learning Center materials are on the 3rd floor.
- SCSU Oversize books are on the 3rd floor.
- SCSU Ref books are on the main and 2nd floors:
- Reference call numbers beginning with A-R are on the main floor.
- Reference call numbers beginning with S-Z are on the 2nd floor
- SCSU Thesis Ground Floor books – The last ten years are located on the 3rd floor of the library. Earlier years are currently unavailable in hardcopy but may be available online. Please see a Reference Librarian.
- SCSU Current Issues are on the lower level.
- SCSU Bound Journals are on the lower level.
- SCSU Newspapers are on the lower level.
- SCSU Microfilm are on the lower level.
- If you see “IN REPAIR” in the status box, please see a Reference Librarian. The item was damaged in the flood and is currently unavailable in Buley, but may be available through another source.
